Jingye Steel Successfully Develops 800MPa High-Strength Steel for Hydropower Applications

As China’s “Dual Carbon” strategy continues to advance, domestic hydropower projects are rapidly upgrading toward higher water heads, larger capacities, and lighter structures. The demand for high-end hydropower steel in key projects such as pumped-storage power stations continues to grow. As a critical material for core pressure-bearing components including penstocks, steel bifurcation pipes, and spiral cases, 800MPa-grade hydropower steel must simultaneously meet stringent requirements for ultra-high strength, excellent low-temperature toughness, and low welding crack sensitivity, along with strict carbon equivalent control standards.

To overcome technical challenges and precisely meet the requirements of pumped-storage power station projects, Jingye Steel established a dedicated R&D task force to develop 800MPa high-grade hydropower steel. By adopting a low-carbon microalloying approach combined with precise quenching and tempering heat treatment technology, the team achieved dual optimization in both performance and process. Within just 15 days, three rounds of testing were completed, and optimal production parameters were determined.
Test results show that the product’s tensile strength remains stable above 800MPa, with Charpy impact energy exceeding 200J at -40°C and over 150J under strain aging conditions at -20°C. With outstanding low-temperature toughness, the steel is well-suited for complex climatic environments, and all performance indicators fully meet hydropower engineering requirements.
